Francis-Xavier Sosu, a human rights lawyer and Member of Parliament for Medina, has proposed reforms to Ghana’s criminal justice system which he believes is outdated.
He pointed out that criminal justice systems had been reformed globally and questioned why Ghana was still following the old code.
Sosu described this as a form of legal colonialism, as the state continues to follow laws established during colonial times without considering its unique circumstances.
Sosu’s comments were in response to concerns about reform in Ghana’s penal system, including the passage of a new penal code.
In an interview with City News, Sosu urged the legislature to look to the judicial systems of developed countries for guidance to expedite the adoption of the law.
