The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has announced plans to host presidential and vice-presidential debates in October 2024.
Despite earlier criticism from the National Democratic Congress over a lack of engagement, the IEA says it has since initiated discussions with various political parties to ensure their participation.
Speaking to the media, distinguished fellow of the IEA Justice Sophia Akuffo emphasised that the debates will provide voters with a clearer understanding of each candidate’s policies and offer a platform for candidates to be evaluated.
“The IEA envisages holding the encounters in September and the debates in October and November. We will announce the precise date, time and venues after conducting engagements with candidates and their political parties.
“We will also urge all to keep themselves updated on the IEA website at www.ieagh.org.”
The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, on several occasions to a debate on the economy and other issues of national interest.
The NDC has, however, rejected such calls saying the NPP’s flagbearer wants to revive his dead political career.
