Retired Police Officer, COP Alex Mensah, one of the men at the centre of the IGP leaked tape saga has disagreed with calls for his punishment and scrapping of retirement benefits.
Speaking exclusively to Johnnie Hughes on 3FM Sunrise on Tuesday, July 2, COP Alex Mensah contended that it is only persons who are not in their right senses will call for his punishment.
The Retired Police Officer’s comment was in response to Security Analyst, Dr. Adam Bona’s call for the retired officer to be called back into office and face punishment for the alleged plot of removal of the IGP.
“No sensible person can say that [Punishment and removal of benefit]. Anybody who makes that comment, we have to check his brains. He should be sent to the mental hospital and check his brains…Maybe his brain is not working well,” he said.
Mr. Alex Mensah believes he conducted himself in the right manner while he was in office.
Dr. Adam Bona in an interview on 3FM Sunrise on July 2 suggested that COP Alex Mensah committed the alleged crime while he was an officer and must face punishment.
“As far as I am concerned, he committed the crime whiles in Service so you are trialed in service and then whatever punishment is it, it is given to you. the reason is that, it is supposed to serve as a deterrent for other service officers who might want to do the same,” Dr. Bona explained.
Last year, Parliament set up a committee to investigate content of a leaked tape relating to plans to ouster the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
COP Alex George Mensah, Supt. George Lysander Asare and Supt. Emmanuel Eric Gyedi, together with former Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bugri Naabu were heard on tape orchestrating the removal of the IGP.
Last week, a purported report of the committee was intercepted by the media. Somehow, the report was not signed by the Chairman of the Committee, Samuel Atta Akyea.
Among the findings of the committee as contained in the leaked report is that the aforementioned policers misconducted themselves.
The committee said the conduct of the three officers is a major offence under Police regulations and must be sanctioned in accordance with the Police disciplinary procedure.
