The 2024/25 Malta Guinness Ghana Women’s Premier League Southern Zone has taken a new twist after Police Ladies moved to the top of the league table.
This comes following Hasaacas Ladies’ failure to pick all three points at home in their game against Halifax Queens on Sunday, April 6.
The two teams, Police and Hasaacas, were separated by just two points heading into matchday 17 of the league last weekend.
Police were first in action as they hosted Faith Ladies, who have been struggling all season. Mary Berko netted in the 40th and 79th minutes to seal a 2-0 home win for the security side.
Hasaacas, next in action, were expected to pick all three points to continue their lead at the top of the table.
However, a late Seidatu Wahab goal meant the game at Kobby’s Astro Turf ended 2-2, resulting in Boniface Ayipah’s side dropping two crucial points.
Sylvia Osei seemed to have scored the winning goal for Hasmal Ladies in the 78th minute, but Wahab pulled one from her drawer to deny the home side.
The results from the weekend mean that Hasaacas and Police are both on 36 points after 17 games. However, the latter moves to the top of the table due to their head-to-head superiority, having handed Hasacas their only league defeat of the season.
Jonina Ladies’ victory over the weekend also gives them a chance of clinching the crown in the zone as they sit on 34 points heading into the final round.
Hasaacas face Jonina Ladies on the final day while Police Ladies come up against Epiphany Warriors.
What to expect on the final day
- If Hasaacas are to seal a slot in this season’s final, they would need to beat Jonina Ladies on the final day and hope Police Ladies will lose to Epiphany Warriors.
- For Police Ladies, a draw will be good enough to win the Southern Zone, provided Jonina also drop points against Hasaacas Ladies.
- Jonina Ladies could also be crowned champions of the zone if they can beat Hasaacas Ladies and hope Police drop points against Epiphany.
