On Friday, the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, donated GH¢100,000 in cash to the flood victims in the Volta Region. Mr Kofi Attor, the Chief of Staff at the Office of the Speaker, made the presentation on behalf of Mr Bagbin at a gathering in Sogakope. He explained that Mr Bagbin was unable to attend due to official duties.

The constituencies that will benefit from the donation include North Tongu, South Tongu, Central Tongu, Ketu North, Anlo, Ketu South, Keta, Asuogyaman, Kpando, South Dayi, and North Dayi. In addition, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Minority Caucus in Parliament also presented relief items worth GH¢150,000 to the affected communities.

Mr Attor, speaking to the media, emphasized the seriousness of the flooding situation and called for the fair distribution of all received items. He stated, “We hope that the water recedes soon to bring life back to normal in these constituencies, but until then, we have brought water, food, and other relief to alleviate their plight. There is a need for collective assistance.”

The Speaker’s delegation visited some of the affected communities, including Galoshota in the Anlo Constituency and Mepe in North Tongu, to express their condolences to the constituents.

Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the Chairman of the NDC, urged the Government not to view assistance to the affected people and communities as a favor. He called for unity in addressing this national crisis.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, the Minority Leader, suggested relocating the affected people to the Saglemi Housing site.

The Sogakope Anglican Church Bishops also donated GH¢50,000 to support the affected people. On September 15, 2023, the Volta River Authority initiated a controlled spill from the Akosombo and Kpong dams due to heavy rainfall in the Volta River catchment area.

This was necessary to protect the dams’ integrity. However, the water level continued to rise in early October, surpassing the maximum operating level of 276 feet. As a result, the Volta River Authority had to continue with the spillage, causing flooding in numerous communities in the North, South, and Central Tongu Districts, as well as the Ada East District.
