Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party(NPP), and now Spokesperson of Alan Kyeremanten, Nana Ohene Ntow has described Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s driver’s mate analogy as an insult to the people of Ghana and the 1992 constitution.
Dr.Bawumia, who is the flagbearer of the NPP in the upcoming elections during his maiden public address indicating his intentions for the country held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), said, “As Vice-President, I am like a driver’s mate. But if, by the Grace of God, you make me President, I will be in the driver’s seat with constitutionally mandated authority to pursue my vision and my priorities.”
However, responding to this during an interview on GHOne Television, Nana Ohene Ntow said that once a candidate is voted as president, his running-mate is deemed to have been voted for.
According to him, if the President is indisposed or out of the jurisdiction today, it is the Vice President who occupies his shoes until he returns to post.
Against this backdrop, he said, “ So if Bawumia was in that position and he is now telling Ghanaians that position is so useless, you can’t do anything with the position of a vice President, I think it is even an insult to the constitution of Ghana.”
“Then we should probably listen to Bawumia and abolish the position of Vice President because it is useless. How can you talk like that to the people of Ghana, that is why I am saying that statement is pathetic from anyone aspiring to become the President of Ghana,” he added.
