Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has stated that there is no perfect person in this world.
This statement has been necessitated by criticisms of the purported choice of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Alias NAPO) as the running mate of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Earlier in the week, Dr Bawumia was reported to have presented Dr Opoku Prempeh’s name to President Akufo-Addo as his running mate.
This development has attracted scathing comments from no less a person than a member of the party’s Council of Elders and MP for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi.
Mr Appiah-Kubi said although Dr Opoku Prempeh has what it takes to be vice president of Ghana, he would not choose the Manhyia South MP, if it was up to him to decide.
“We have not been consulted as a caucus for us to state our position, but me Appiah-Kubi, if it was for me to choose, I won’t choose him. Because he is not my preference… I would want somebody who will be open to the people on the ground, who will be able to deliver the votes, somebody who will submit to the presidency and who will also bring parliament closer to the executive,” he explained.
Addressing the issue on June 27, Mr Afenyo-Markin assured that no decision has been made yet regarding the position of running mate for the NPP’s flagbearer.
“We’ve all heard matters regarding running mate to complement our ticket, but no decision has been made yet. There is no perfect person in this world. There is no perfect character in this world. None of us can tick every box, so let’s be careful how we describe each other, how we say things about our colleagues, and how we approach things.”
The Majority Leader stressed the need for members of the party to avoid denigrating one another.
“So, let us wait and at least respect the leadership of the party. We should not go out of our way to denigrate ourselves or describe ourselves in a manner that will be unacceptable,” he advised.
Afenyo-Markin called for respect towards the party’s leadership and urged members to refrain from using language that could cause divisiveness in the party.
