The Catholic Bishop of Goaso Diocese, Most Rev Peter Kwaku Atuahene, has enjoined key stakeholders in the Ahafo Region to collaborate in ensuring peace and stability in the area.
This follows a series of killings, shooting incidents and protests which have been recorded in the region within the last three months, leading to five deaths, several injuries and damage to properties.
These include the murder of a 30-year-old nurse of the Yamfo Health Centre, Richard Antwi Agyei, who was allegedly assaulted by police officers and was later pronounced dead by doctors after he was arrested for allegedly possessing illegal substances.
Another one occurred in Sankore, where Akwasi Adu, a sawmill operator, was killed in an exchange of gunfire with the regional patrol team of the police after he resisted arrest.
An additional three persons were shot dead in a forest near Bechem after they were allegedly involved in illegal logging in the area.
Recently, students of Hwediem Senior High School in the Asutifi South District demonstrated against the management of the school for poor sanitary conditions, payment of unapproved fees, and poor infrastructure.
Though the police service has vowed to bring the perpetrators of these criminal acts to book, the insecurity situation has raised a lot of conversations among residents.
Some concerned natives of the region, local and abroad, especially the youth, have called on the Regional Security Committee (REGSEC) headed by Charity Ghardinar, the Regional Minister, to enhance peace and stability.
Most Rev Kwaku Atuahene stated that if this lawlessness is not halted, potential investors, tourists and holidaymakers will be put off.
He was concerned that the situation could also impact already existing businesses.
He has admonished residents of the region, especially young persons, to use the significance of Easter, which is peace and love, presented to the world by Jesus Christ, to settle all scores and live peacefully.
