Sekondi-Takoradi Mayor Abdul Issah Mumin was on Wednesday morning locked out of his office for several hours.
This was as a result of the strike action by Civil and Local Government Staff Association (CLOGSAG).
TV3’s Ewurama Smith reports that the mayor was seen pacing around the entrance of his office and said he is waiting for keys.
The CLOGSAG has declared a nationwide strike effective Wednesday, July 3, 2024.
The Association is unhappy that government has failed to implement the proposed new salary structure approved by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission after one and a half years since a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed.
On Wednesday morning, almost all the MMDAs were locked up with no personnel at post. Only a few National Service persons were available at the Sekondi-Takoradi Metro Assembly.
Perhaps the heavy rains which started around 3:00am and the resultant floods also helped the situation because the usual busy environment was missing. The Assembly’s vehicles were also parked in the yard.
The interesting sight, however, was the mayor Abdul Mumin Issah who had been locked out of his office. He indicated that he was aware of the declared strike, but was not expecting it to be this intense.
“I came this morning and everything is jammed up, everything is locked up, even my office, I haven’t been able to enter my office because those who handle the keys are on strike.“
“I have asked them to bring the keys, they are on strike, but I am not on strike,“ he said.
Asked how he would work without his staff, he said “Well those mails that I need to attend to, I will attend to them and if there are any visitors or any members of public that need help, I am here for them.”
Meanwhile, the Western Regional Secretary of CLOGSAG, Kwame Tawiah has urged his colleagues to comply with the strike.
“We are not a violent Association. So, if you go to work, we can’t punish you, but we have a means of punishing you. You will come to our office one day when you need help, we will also know how we are going to deal with you,” he said.
