In a recent discourse on TV3’s NewDay show, Nana Yaa Jantuah, General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), criticised President Akufo-Addo’s leadership and his interactions with Kenyan President William Ruto.
Her comments came in the wake of mounting economic difficulties and controversial policy decisions in Ghana and Kenya.
Jantuah suggested that President Akufo-Addo’s recent meeting with President Ruto may have influenced Ghana’s economic policies.
“When you make bad friends, your judgment is clouded,” she remarked. “Ruto visited Nana Addo not long ago, and shortly after returning to Kenya, he introduced a tax bill. It’s possible Nana Addo might have advised him on leveraging taxes to handle crises, like our Covid levy.”
Drawing parallels between the two leaders, Jantuah highlighted the warnings from Kenya’s former President, Uhuru Kenyatta.
“When Ruto was coming into power, Kenyatta warned that Ruto was not fit for leadership, but the Kenyans didn’t listen. Similarly, our elders cautioned us about Nana Addo, who came into power with biblical quotes like ‘The battle is the Lord’s,’ much like Ruto did.”
She pointed to the concerning consequences of ignoring such advice. “In the 2020 elections, nine people lost their lives, and nothing substantial has been done about it. Now, in Kenya, 13 people have died following Ruto’s policies. Bad friendships lead to bad advice and worse outcomes.”
