The impact of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, has opened the door to ruthless exploitation in the Central Region, where communities are now grappling with severe water scarcity.

A gallon of borehole water is being sold for as high as GH¢5, as residents struggle to find clean and reliable sources.

With the pollution of the Ayensu and Pra Rivers worsening the crisis, water has effectively become a commodity controlled by private sellers.

In some communities, okada riders have transformed into water couriers, charging desperate households for every gallon they are able to secure.
