Child rights advocacy groups have questioned what they describe as the haste with which the Police granted bail to a suspect in the murder of two children at Kakpayili, a suburb of Tamale in the Northern Region.
The children, both aged three, are believed to have gone missing since June 22, 2024.
Their school uniforms and almost decomposed and dismembered bodies abandoned in a vehicle were discovered at a house belonging to a suspect identified only as Mallam Madaha.
Less than 24 hours after the suspect, identified as mallam Madaha, was arrested he has been granted bail, and his whereabouts unknown.
Legal practitioner, Christian Malm Hesse, has questioned the rush in releasing the suspect on bail.
“We know that every offence is bailable, so he has the right to be bailed. But in a case like this, it will take a lot of balance for the right thing to be done, if he was just arrested only on Saturday, and granted bail on Sunday in such a case which has generated a lot of public concern, then I question the haste with which the police did that,“ he said.
Executive Director of child rights advocacy group, Child’s Rights International, Bright Appiah says the action by the Police is unfortunate.
“We need to keep close tabs on suspects in such cases, and in this one where the man allegedly cannot be found, it is unfortunate that he was granted that bail. We are likely to step in and augment the efforts of the police if we have to,” he assured.
Meanwhile, the families of the murdered children have urged the inspector general of police to ensure that the suspect is dealt with in accordance with the laws of the country.
The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of two children in Kakpayili, a suburb of Tamale in the Northern Region.
Police in a statement noted that the two deceased children had been reported missing on 25th June, 2024, adding that their bodies “were found on 30th June, 2024 in an abandoned vehicle in one of the compounds within the Kakpayili community.”
However, the residents of Kakpayili suspect that the children were murdered for ritual purposes, as their decomposed bodies were abandoned in a vehicle behind a mallam’s house.
