The Minister for Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso Boakye, has lauded the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), which aims at empowering local assemblies to develop and maintain road infrastructure.
Speaking at the launch, Asenso Boakye emphasised the critical role of good roads in driving economic growth and improving livelihoods.
He noted that poor road conditions hinder farmers’ ability to transport goods to market and limit access to essential social services like healthcare and education.
The DRIP initiative seeks to address these challenges by collaborating with Metropolitans, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to identify and tackle road maintenance needs.
Under the initiative, the government has announced plans to equip MMDAs across the country with earth-moving equipment to carry out road construction.
According to him, engineers from the Ministry will work closely with local authorities to implement critical road maintenance activities, including grading and gravelling of unpaved roads and installing drainage structures.
Asenso Boakye expressed his commitment to empowering local governments and promoting economic growth through improved road infrastructure.
“Our engineers will work closely with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to ensure the effective execution of this initiative, fostering a spirit of collaboration and shared responsibility. Our vision is to empower the MMDAs to plan, implement and monitor road projects across their localities.”
