Finally, it is confirmed! Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, a.k.a NAPO, is the running mate to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The following report takes a look at the pair particularly Dr. Opoku Prempeh whose choice was not well received by some party faithful.

Right after Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was elected as flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, the next conversation was who becomes his running mate going into the December 2024 elections.

Several names came up but gradually Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s name begun to outshine the rest, by the day.

A number of polls conducted by organisations including the National Intelligence Bureau put the Manhyia South MP in the lead.

But news of dislike or disapproval for the Energy Minister begun after it became obvious that he was the Vice President’s choice.

Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi was the first to voice out, saying NAPO is a wrong choice.

“If it was for me to choose, I won’t choose him (Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh). He’s not my preference but that doesn’t mean he’s not qualified.’’

The law maker continued “we need someone more humble than the Vice President, we should not get someone who will seek to command our (future) President.’’

“We want someone who will help the flagbearer not someone who will want to lead the flagbearer,” Mr. Appiah-Kubi added.

But the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin cautioned members to be mindful with their utterances.

He said, “there is no perfect person in this world. There is no perfect character in this world. None of us can tick every box, so let’s be careful how we describe each other, how we say things about our colleagues, and how we approach things.’’

A Pro NPP group, Concerned NPP Grassroots and Executives in Kumasi also raised concerns claiming Dr. Opoku Prempeh was imposed on the Vice President indicating it will not serve the interest of the party.

“You and I know that when it comes to the unity aspect of him and respect aspect…even when he was serving at the Ministry of Energy that we all are experiencing challenges and we called for a timetable, look at what he told the good people of Ghana. We don’t think such a running mate can help promote the image of our great party. That is why we are pleading that we get a running mate who has the same character or the same attitude just like our flagbearer.’’ Remarked the Convenor, Ebenezer Nyamekye.

Other social commentators also raised concerns about the character mismatch of Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Well, whatever your opinion, he is the chosen man for the job!

A medical doctor by profession, one can say that NAPO has mastered some expertise in the area of energy, having been Energy Minister for nearly  4 years.

He may also have some knowledge in the education sector having served as Education Minister as well.

As an experienced politician, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh may have a lot to offer, but that is not the concern of some party members, but his passionate and energetic character as against Dr. Bawumia’s calm and composed character.

Whether there is truth in what the NPP members are saying or not, probably the 4th term Manhyia South MP will have to work to discredit his critics.

The political campaign season is just about starting, and it will be interesting to see how the ticket of the two doctors will fare; one a doctor of books (PhD) and the other a medical doctor (M.D.).

Well, the titles may not be the important thing here, but how the two can work together effectively despite their character differences and lead the NPP to achieving the party’s mantra of breaking the 8 in the December polls.
