Contrary to earlier reports, the Conventions People’s Party (CPP) has given the strongest indication that it will field a presidential candidate to contest the December 7 polls.

The party has scheduled the month of August to hold congress to elect its flagbearer.

Last week, Acting Communication Director of the party, Sylvester Sarpong-Suprano in an interview with an Accra-based FM station indicated that they will not be fielding any presidential candidate for the upcoming elections.

He cited delay in the party’s internal processes to elect national executives five months to the polls as the reason.

But addressing journalists on July 3 in Accra about the development, the party vehemently debunked the earlier report indicating that the CPP is better placed to partake in the general elections.

The Coordinator of the National Reorganizational Committee of the party, Moses Yirimambo Ambing observed that “the CPP is a party that founded Ghana, hence it will not be right that it does not take part in the December 7 elections.”

He further espoused the view that “the constitution of the Independent Committee is to ensure a candidate is produced for the party and we are on course”.

The committee is also ambitiously targeting to field parliamentary candidates in all 276 constituencies.

Ahead of the polls, an eight-member Independent Committee has been constituted as the highest national decision-making body in the party to oversee the streamlining of all internal processes leading to the congress to elect a flagbearer to lead the party into the December 7 elections.

A sub-national reorganization committee is also in place to augment the work of the Independent Committee by auditing the national delegates’ album and recalibrate it as the official document for the congress.

The committees have also zoned the country into three for grassroot engagement.
Moses Yirimambo Ambing insisted that the delay in the party going for congress is driven by research.

The independent committee of the CPP is also seeking to reunite with all members who have exited the party or relinquished their positions as a result of internal wranglings.

He said, ”it is part of our mandate to engage with all party members sitting on the fence to come back to the party. Nana Yaa Jantua Akyempim did not resign from the party but resigned from her position as the General Secretary of the party, but we will engage her again.”

“She is not the only person we will engage. We will also approach Emmanuel Bright Akwetey, Samia Yaba Nkrumah, Nii Armah Akonfrah and others will all be brought onboard so the NDC and the NPP should wait to see what will happen,” he warned.
