Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Freddie Blay is threatening to sue North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa over claims that his family had acquired a beachfront belonging to the Labadi Beach Hotel.
The Polo Beach Club which belongs to Kwaw Blay, son of Freddie Blay has been operational since 2019 in partnership with the Labadi Beach Hotel, until both entities went their separate ways in 2021 due to a disagreement.
Freddie Blay says the MP has dragged the name of his family in the mud hence the suit later this week noting that “He will hear from me within this week when I take him to court to prove his claims against me and my family.”
According to Freddie Blay, the Polo Beach Club secured their beach front from the La Traditional Council who leased the land to them for about 20 to 25 years noting that
“This stretch of land used here does not belong to government and it does not belong to the Labadi Beach Hotel.”
Freddie Blay was speaking to journalists after taking them round the facility which sits just beside the Labadi Beach Hotel facing the sea.
He said the hotel decided to claim a higher percentage of profits made by the Polo Beach club when both parties worked together. Based on disagreements the latter consulted the La Traditional Council who gave them their current land area contrary to claims by the North Tongu MP.
“It is Okudzeto Ablakwa who is making it look as if Kwaw Blay had cheated the hotel and his partners but it is nothing of that sort. If anything at all, the court will decide… “If you like ask the Labadi Beach hotel or the La Traditional Council about what arrangement they came to on the matter.”
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in his campaign against what he calls state capture by politically exposed individuals said the beachfront of the Labadi Beach hotel had been taken over by Freddy Blay’s relatives. The former NPP chair says his son acquired the property through due process and not because of political connections.
“Where is the evidence that this property was acquired because Freddie Blay is the father of the youngman [Kwaw Blay]. They even made it look like it is not one person doing it but all my children. I have a daughter too. If I was not lucky they would have even added her to it.
“They make it look like being a politician is a crime but that shouldn’t be the case” he added.
The North Tongu MP however says he is not worried about the suit and even questioned by the Blay family has only been threatening to sue him without any legal action. He notes that he stands by his words and will continue to resist what he deems is ‘state capture’ of national assets by politicians.
