With about 5 more years to the deadline of the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda, there have been urgent calls for the world to redouble its efforts to get the 17 Goals back on track.
In line with the UN’s agenda to re-activate the goals, Ghana will organise the SDGs Action Summit from 2nd to 3rd July 2024.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlights the connections between the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainable development.
It advocates for a world of equal access to the basic necessities of life, including safe drinking water, education, food and a sustainable environment.
Since its creation in 2015 however, only 12% of the SDGs are currently on track globally. And in Africa the number is 4%.
Experts have blamed climate change, the Covid pandemic, conflicts in parts of the world among others for this slow pace of progress, across the world.
At the Launch of the SDGs Action Summit, Presidential Advisor on the SDGs Dr. Eugene Owusu explained, “without quicker progress towards achieving the sustainable development goals close to 500,000,000 people in Africa will remain in extreme poverty by the year 2030. The challenges that Africa faces in achieving the SDGs is compounded by a plethora of man-made challenges, climate change, conflicts, the residual but consequential effects of the covid 19 pandemic, policy failures at governance, and the pear-shaped global governance architecture.”
And so where does Ghana sit in all of this? And is the country really making any progress?
Dr. Eugene Owusu says Ghana’s progress is mixed with challenges.
“I’m proud to say that we’ve organized ourselves very well towards the achievement of the sustainable development goals. I think for me, it’s fair to say that our outturn is somewhat mixed, which is naturally expected. There have been some positive gains …. one is that we have indeed achieved gender parity when it comes to education, particularly at the primary and secondary level… the second area is access to social services, particularly access to drinking water. Also access to good sanitation. and notably access to electricity. One of the areas we are also very proud of is in the domain of maternal mortality,” he said.
The SDGs Action Summit 2024 is slated for July 2 and 3 and will be on the theme, “Transforming Today and Safeguarding the Future.”
