Cristiano Ronaldo, who stands on the brink of breaking numerous records at Euro 2024, experienced a night of mixed emotions despite Portugal’s triumph over Slovenia.
His missed penalty in extra time almost cost his team, but he redeemed himself in the shootout to help Portugal secure a quarter-final clash against France.
The 39-year-old Portugal captain, hoping to become the oldest player to score at the Euros and the only player to score in six consecutive European Championships, was denied yet again. Despite being presented with the chance to become the hero of the night, his spot kick was saved by a familiar foe, Atlético Madrid’s Jan Oblak, in the first half of extra time.
“Even the strongest people have their bad days. I was at rock bottom when the team needed me the most,” Ronaldo said, visibly emotional after the match.
However, when the game went to a penalty shootout, Ronaldo confidently stepped up to convert the first kick. This set the tone for a stellar performance from the Seleção, with goalkeeper Diogo Costa making history by saving Slovenia’s three penalties. Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva also successfully converted their penalties, ensuring that coach Roberto Martinez, who received a yellow card during the game, saw his team through to the next round.
“Sadness at the start is joy at the end. That’s what football is. Moments, inexplicable moments. I feel sad and happy at the same time,” Ronaldo reflected. “But the important thing is to enjoy it. The team did an extraordinary job. We fought right to the end, and I think we deserved it because we had more authority.”
Portugal will now face France in the quarter-finals, hoping to replicate their success from the 2016 tournament when they defeated Les Bleus to win the championship.
