Kwaku Kwarteng, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Obuasi West, has expressed his gratitude towards the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the current administration for the opportunities he has been given.
He told Umaru Sanda Amadu in an interview on Face to Face on Channel One TV that he entered parliament in 2012 and was appointed to the finance committee as a first-time member.
He noted that he served on the committee for four years before being appointed as the deputy minister for finance in 2017 when the NPP came into power.
In 2021, despite the common practice of removing individuals from government, Kwarteng said he was instead called upon by the leadership of his party and government to support parliament, which had been depleted of its finance people as given the tight numbers in parliament, his presence was deemed necessary.
The Obuasi West MP said after three years, it was considered that others were now in a position to take over, so he was asked to return to the executive branch which he appreciated but decided to serve in Parliament.
“This administration and the NPP have been kind to me. I entered parliament in 2012, I was put on the prestigious finance committee as a member, first timer. I was there for four years. As soon as we won power in 2017, the government said go and be the deputy minister for finance.”
“Look in 2021 it wasn’t that I was just removed from government as ordinarily people will be removed from government. The leadership of my party and government actually called me and said parliament has been depleted of all its finance people…Almost everybody said the way parliament is right now with this tight numbers you need to go and support parliament. It made sense to me and then I came to parliament.”
“After three years, it was considered that at least some people were in a position to do it because others have learnt and so come back to the executive, I say thank you. If you will not be grateful to such a government then you must be a very ungrateful person. So, I am grateful to the president for the opportunities he has given me,” he stated.
