Minister for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Dr Rashid Pelpuo, has issued a stern warning to employers, emphasising that failing to pay social security contributions for their employees is illegal and could result in severe legal consequences.

Speaking on JoyNews AM Show, Dr Pelpuo underscored the importance of these contributions, stating, “It is illegal not to pay someone’s social security contributions. These payments are vital for the future security of workers, particularly in times of retirement, illness, or unforeseen circumstances.”

He went on to explain that the issue of unpaid contributions had recently come to his attention. “Just recently, we observed a case where an employer had failed to make the required social security payments. We immediately instructed the employer to settle the outstanding amounts, and I am pleased to confirm that the employer has now complied, ensuring that the full amount owed to the individual has been paid.”

Dr Pelpuo further stressed that employers who fail to meet their obligations face serious consequences.

“If employers neglect to make these payments, they are inviting legal action. If they fail to comply, they are essentially inviting legal consequences, which could lead to even more severe penalties.”

“The government will continue to take firm action to safeguard workers and ensure that employers comply with their legal obligations, securing the financial future of employees,” Dr Pelpuo noted.
