Traders at the New Kejetia Market in Kumasi are mounting pressure on the Government to as a matter of urgency, dismiss the managing director of the facility, Mr. Edmund Kofi Duffour.
With a two-week ultimatum given, the traders have threatened to take matters into their own hands if there’s no change in management of the facility within the given period.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, June 25, the traders alleged that the current management is supervising mismanagement including the unlawful sale of pavements leading to overcrowding in the market.
They also highlighted several lapses in the work of the management including the disappearance of an amount of three hundred thousand cedis (GH¢300,000) that was donated to the victims of last year’s fire outbreak.
Reuben Amey, the secretary of the Combined Kejetia Traders Association called on the government to ensure the contractor returns to the site.

“It’s very sad that after more than 1 year when fire gutted the Kejetia Market, we still remain here talking about the place not being fixed up. All that we’re trying to tell the government is that we’re in an election year. We don’t want to get to December where we will have confrontations with them. It will get to a point even when you want to come to the market, we will be resisting it.
“The government should just talk to the contractor to move back on site and restore the 54 shops. Because the people are staying in the house, they are not doing anything. They have not been given any spaces around to sell in bits and pieces. It’s like everybody has forgotten about them, nobody is talking about their issues, and nobody seems to care.
More than a year after a fire incident led to the destruction of some 54 shops in the market, that section remains closed.
The traders lament the delay in fixing the place is affecting the victims and have thus reiterated calls on the government to urgently reconstruct it.
