There is brewing tension between the Nii Odai Ntow family in Kwabenya and real estate developer Comet properties arising from land boundary dispute.
Management of comet properties have subsequently called out the Nii Odai Ntow family for the alleged destruction caused to its properties a week ago.
Armed landguards and thugs were reported to have gone to the area to terrorise residents occupying the lands serving as boundary around Ashonmang and Kwabenya in the Greater Accra Region on one hand and Brekuso in the Eastern Region.
The Ghana military subsequently stepped in to curtail the situation.
On Monday, June 24, 2024, management at a news conference held at Brekuso called on the security agencies particularly the police to speed up investigations into the unprovoked attack on residents.
Director of Operations and Compliance at Comet Properties Limited, Bernard Kusi-Appau further called on President Akufo Addo to leave a legacy by resolving the boundary issue between the three communities.
Background and Legal Context
Comet Properties Limited acquired over 1,000 acres of land in 2002 from Akwapim families in Brekuso, Eastern Region, to develop the urban community now known as Comet Estates.
The estate, which houses thousands of residents, is part of the Akwapim South Municipal Assembly and has all the legal interest registered with the Lands Commission at Koforidua.
The area has witnessed significant development; providing essential services such as electricity, water, roads, police stations, clinics, and schools, all funded by the company and its associates.
Conflict and Legal Disputes
Management of Comet Properties said, a Supreme Court ruling in 1904 [Bosompim vrs Martei] led to the Ntow Odai family ceding about 12,690 acres of the land boundary.
Despite the ruling, the Odai Ntow family have allegedly laid claim over the land resulting in frequent attacks on residents, an action the company says is criminal.
Managers of the estate are therefore calling on the government to enforce this judgment.
Meanwhile, reacting to the accusations, the Queenmother of Kwabenya, Maa Kokoi Dugbatey, confirmed sending her men to grade the area in question but denied destroying buildings cited on the land.
She further said that, claims by Comet Properties that the land is part of the Eastern region is false because the land is in the Greater Accra region and becomes property of the Kwabenya Stool.
