Hundreds of residents from Tsiame and surrounding areas in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region turned out in large numbers to welcome Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Efutu, to his ancestral hometown.
The excitement and enthusiasm displayed by the crowd attested to the high esteem in which Mr Afenyo-Markin is held by the people of Tsiame. The visit formed part of a homecoming initiative aimed at empowering women in business.
In his address, Mr Afenyo-Markin described the turnout as significant and a testament to the positive impact he has had on the lives of the people.
“My visit to Tsiame is significant not only for the community but also for the country. It highlights the importance of community engagement and the role that prominent individuals can play in promoting development and progress,” he said.
He explained that the initiative was aimed at supporting, motivating, and giving hope to women and young girls in the area through acts of benevolence that would improve the living standards of the residents.
The MP noted that the people of Tsiame and the entire municipality had high expectations for future endeavours, with many eager to see how continued support would contribute to the development of the community.
“My donations of hairdryers, sewing machines, and other items are from my heart. I am not, in any way, preparing to stand as an independent candidate or anything of the sort in the Keta constituency—it will never happen. I simply deemed it fit to extend a helping hand to my own people in my hometown,” he clarified.
Mr Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpe, the MP for Keta, who was also present at the event, thanked Mr Afenyo-Markin for his kind gesture, noting that the support would boost apprenticeship programmes in the area.
He urged fellow MPs to emulate the Minority Leader by helping to alleviate the plight of people in their respective constituencies. He also encouraged the beneficiaries to use the donated items for their intended purposes to achieve economic independence.
Mr Bernard Suka, former Assembly Member of Tsiame and Deputy Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Keta Constituency, told the Ghana News Agency that Mr Afenyo-Markin’s achievements and contributions to the area had not gone unnoticed.
He commended the Minority Leader’s dedication to public service and his commitment to making a positive impact, which had earned him admiration throughout the region and beyond.
“The people of Tsiame are proud of Afenyo-Markin’s accomplishments. The warm reception he received is a reflection of the community’s appreciation for his hard work and dedication to making a difference in the lives of others,” Mr Suka said.
He added that Mr Afenyo-Markin had become a role model for many young people in the area, inspiring them to work hard and pursue their dreams.
He highlighted that the Minority Leader’s donation of over 30 hairdryers and sewing machines, worth thousands of cedis, would have a meaningful and lasting impact on the community.
Some women who received the donations expressed excitement and gratitude, pledging to use the items responsibly and for their intended purposes.
