England midfielder Phil Foden has temporarily left the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 camp in Germany and returned to the UK due to a pressing family matter, the Football Association has confirmed.
Foden, who has earned 37 caps for England, has been an integral part of the squad, starting all three of their group games in the tournament. His departure comes after England secured the top spot in Group C with five points from three matches.
Gareth Southgate’s side began their Euro 2024 campaign with a narrow victory over Serbia, courtesy of Jude Bellingham’s goal. They followed this up with a 1-1 draw against Denmark and a goalless draw against Slovenia in their final group game.
England’s last-16 match is scheduled to take place in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday at 17:00 BST, with their opponents to be confirmed after Wednesday’s final group games.
Foden’s absence is notable given his key contributions to both the national team and Manchester City.
Phil Foden named Footballer of the Year by FWA
He has been instrumental for Manchester City, helping them clinch their fourth consecutive Premier League title. Foden’s exceptional performances earned him the Player of the Season award for his role in the triumph.
The Football Association has not specified when Foden will rejoin the squad, but his return is eagerly anticipated as England prepares for the knockout stages of Euro 2024.
