The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, has expressed concern over reckless motorbike riding during Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, describing the practice as a worrying and dangerous trend.
In a message delivered on the Chief Imam’s behalf during Eid-ul-Fitr prayers at Independence Square, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, noted that while the occasion is meant to promote peace and unity, the conduct of some young people is undermining its essence.
“On days like this, some young people ride motorbikes recklessly, terrorising and intimidating others who come to observe the beauty of the celebration. This is a worrying trend,” he stated.
According to him, the behaviour not only endangers lives but also creates fear among members of the public, including non-Muslims who gather to witness the festivities.
The Chief Imam, who serves as a patron and ambassador for road safety, revealed that concerns about the issue have also been brought to his attention by the National Road Safety Authority, prompting renewed calls for action.
He emphasised the need for intensified public education and stricter enforcement of road traffic regulations to curb the situation.
“Through public education and, where necessary, enforcement of the law, we can take steps to address this situation,” he noted.
Sheikh Sharubutu further assured of his willingness to collaborate with the government and security agencies to promote safer celebrations and protect lives.
“If there is anything we can do together, I am ready to partner with you,” he added.
He urged the youth to exercise restraint and responsibility, stressing that discipline and respect for others must remain central to national celebrations.
