Star Oil has commissioned a new primary school as part of its efforts to enhance education and safety in CK Kope, a community in Tapa Abotoase within the Biakoye District of the Oti Region
The initiative is set to provide children with easy access to quality education, eliminating the daily risks associated with crossing the hazardous Volta Lake.
The newly built school, which cost nearly two million Ghana cedis, features modern facilities, including separate washrooms for staff and students, staff rooms, and a headmaster’s office.
The project is a testament to Star Oil’s deep-rooted commitment to community development and giving back to the people who have supported its growth.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Star Oil’s CEO, Philip Tieku, emphasiaed that the project was more than just a school—it was a tribute to the company’s legacy and its commitment to improving lives.
“Star Oil has deep roots in this part of Ghana. It was right here in Tapa Abotoase that our founding father, Mr. Kaledzi started his fuel retail business. This school holds a special place in our hearts, as it is our way of honouring our history while securing a better future for the next generation,” he said.
For years, children from CK Kope have had to cross the Volta Lake daily to access education, a journey fraught with danger.
Tragically, some children have drowned in the process. Recognising this urgent need, the Board Chairman of Star Oil, Torgbui Xornametor, Vincent Kaledzi, visited the area and, after listening to residents’ concerns, spearheaded efforts to construct the school.
Beyond the construction of the school, Star Oil is also addressing ongoing safety concerns by donating 500 life jackets to the community. This initiative aims to protect students and residents who may still need to cross the lake.
“This is more than just an investment in education. It is an investment in the lives of the people of CK Kope,” Mr. Tieku added.
He assured that Star Oil would continue to support the school by working closely with the local authorities, teachers, and parents to maintain high educational standards.
Biakoye District Education Director, Roslyn Kafui Ofori, expressed gratitude for the remarkable intervention, acknowledging the significant impact it would have on children’s education.
She also appealed to Star Oil to extend its support by improving access roads leading to the district education office.
Traditional leaders, project partners, and local authorities joined in celebrating the milestone, commending Star Oil for its unwavering commitment to community development.
With this school now operational, children in CK Kope can pursue their education without the looming fear of crossing the treacherous Volta Lake daily. Parents are encouraged to ensure their children attend school regularly, while teachers are urged to provide the best possible learning experiences.
As Mr. Tieku aptly put it, “This school has been built for you. Study hard, dream big, and know that Star Oil believes in you.”
The commissioning of this school marks a new chapter for CK Kope, transforming not just education but also the overall safety and well-being of the community.
