After emerging victorious from a 3-year legal battle, Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, says his acquittal is not just a personal victory but a win for his constituents and the nation as a whole.
Reacting to the court’s decision in an interview with JoyNews, the Assin North MP expressed gratitude and reaffirmed his belief in the legal system.
“It is almost expected because you see, when a man is innocent, no matter what you do, it will be pronounced at some point,” he said.
Mr Quayson praised the judge’s integrity, saying he wished he could have thanked her in the courtroom.
“They were trying to prosecute me but this is a court of law.There is a difference between prosecution and persecution. I am very proud of our lady Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh. I was going to tell her in the courtroom but the rules don’t allow that. She is a very decent human being, more blessings for her,” he said.
He claimed the case against him was politically motivated and accused the prosecution of presenting falsified documents to the court.
“You all know the case was political, it was not factual. You heard the facts from the judges, documents were falsified just to get a conviction. But she has been very firm.”
Mr Quayson also addressed his decision to proceed with the trial rather than accept the AG’s offer to drop the case.
“My lawyer will put out a statement to address why we declined the offer by the new Attorney General to discontinue the case.The timing was wrong and the state had not finished their cross-examination, and if we accepted that offer, the case could be reopened in the future. We didn’t want to be in that situation,” he said.

Despite the intense pressure and public attention, he said he remained mentally strong throughout the trial.
“My mental state was normal during this whole period. When you are not wrong, there’s nothing you should be worried about. No matter where you put the person, they will bounce back.”
He concluded by dedicating the court victory to his constituents and to Ghana.
“I didn’t come to deceive anybody. I came to help my community and serve my country. I love my people of Assin North, and I love my country Ghana. I think this is the day for Assin North, justice for Assin North, and justice for Ghana. This is justice for everybody,” he said.
