Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo has condemned the proposed legislation of the free Senior High School policy.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with TV3, he described the proposed Free SHS bill as unnecessary.
“You legislate it for what? You can legislate about it today if a new government comes and it has majority, it can repeal whatever you may have put in place. But why, why do you want to legislate it?” he quizzed.

Professor Gyampo urged government to rather focus on addressing the pressing needs of teachers and students.
“Who told you that all is right with the free SHS system. I do not believe in the free SHS,” he said.
He noted that government’s concern should solely not be on just making it possible for children to be in school but also address the myriad of issues associated with the policy.
“It is not about tickling ourselves and ticking the box that we have given them education, knowing very well that the texts books are not there, knowing well that teachers are not happy, knowing well that they don’t have the food,” he stated.

The Professor who is also the President of the University Teachers Association (UTAG) University of Ghana branch said the UK government pay for lodging or boarding fees for students for free as part of the policy which he said Ghana copied from the UK.
“We copy blindly. Meanwhile, we can’t do it and you are afraid that somebody will come and discontinue it so you say let us make a law about it,” he said.
The Bill which seeks to make the Free SHS intervention mandatory for future governments to guarantee its sustenance is yet to be laid in Parliament.
