Political scientist at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Kwasi Amakye-Boateng, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he describes as a politically motivated interest on the controversy surrounding the Chief Justice.
Speaking on the AM Show on JoyNews, Dr Amakye-Boateng said the NPP’s planned demonstration over the matter is not in Ghana’s interest, but rather serves the party’s own agenda.
“Their position now to me is hugely political, it is interest. They are biased in the way that they are going about this particular issue, overly biased,” he stated.
Dr Amakye-Boateng argued that the NPP has a history of remaining silent on critical national issues until it serves their interest. He pointed to past incidents where the party ignored public concerns over governance.
“When all of us saw that there was something terribly wrong with the inclusion of a politically exposed person in the Electoral Commission, we all cried out. NPP kept quiet as a party, they kept quiet,” he recalled.
He also cited the case of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, where the then opposition raised concerns about economic mismanagement.
“When some time back the opposition of the day pointed out that Ken Ofori-Atta was mismanaging the economy, NPP initially came on board, retreated and then they folded up. “Have they been acting in the supreme interest of Ghana? At least in the past few years?
“If the answer is yes, we can take whatever submission they come up with now seriously. If the answer is no, then we rubbish it, they are being political, they are simply indicating that they have an interest in certain individuals continuous stay in the judiciary,” he said.
According to him, these actions show a pattern of behaviour where the NPP prioritises internal party interest over national good.
“I am analysing the behaviour of NPP as far as their interest for Ghana, allowing the Ghana theme to guide some of their actions then linking it to this one and then my conclusion is that yes, it is interest that is playing out,” he noted.
He added that even within the NPP, internal divisions have been brushed aside when they no longer benefit the party, referencing the replacement of the former Majority Leader.
“Somewhere along the line the same NPP when they replaced the majority leader of the day with the current majority leader, the party was sort of divided and they came public. Joe Wise spoke and then they folded again.
“Once again they sacrificed the party’s interest as far as that issue was concerned because that was the initial reaction that one wants to say that came like an anomic sort of reaction and that turns out to be the genuine reaction,” he sated.
