The Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Danquah, has expressed doubts about Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s (NAPO) ability to attract floating and undecided voters during the December 7 presidential election.
The researcher’s skepticism centers on whether or not Opoku Prempeh has the charisma and effectiveness in reaching beyond the core supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“As a researcher who works with data, the first question I ask is, who is Matthew Opoku Prempeh coming to convince to vote for the NPP?” Danquah queried. “Is it to convince floating voters or is he being brought in to convince the NPP party? Clearly, he is not being brought in to win floating voters,” he said on Onua FM, July 3.
The Executive Director however believes that Opoku Prempeh’s selection is aimed more at mobilizing the existing NPP base rather than attracting new voters.
“I don’t think he has the charisma to bring in floating voters, so the conclusion is that he is being brought in to mobilize the NPP,” he stated.
He further argued that Opoku Prempeh’s role seems to compensate for the perceived inability of the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to galvanize party supporters on his own.
“The question is, why is the flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia, not able to mobilize the NPP, but rather use his running mate to do that? This is very unusual in our election cycle and campaign.”
Typically, Danquah noted, running mates are chosen to attract floating voters, not merely to energize the party’s base.
“Normally, the running mate is used to attract floating voters, and I don’t think that is the aim of this selection,” he asserted.
He revealed that Global InfoAnalytics is conducting research in Accra to gauge voter sentiments in key constituencies regarding the running mate, NAPO.
“We are doing something in Accra currently, and we believe that by the next week or so, we will see the sentiments and feelings in some key constituencies in Accra with regards to the running mate,” Danquah stated.
