The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has indicated that the devastation caused by tidal waves along the eastern coast is getting “more terrible”.
It indicated that the sea continues to eat into communities such as Salakope, Agavedzi, and Amutinu among others, in the Ketu South Municipality, deepening the woes of residents.
The Volta Regional NADMO Coordinator, Pascal Agbagba, warned of stronger waves in the coming days.
“The situation is getting more terrible, we are getting indications that the waves will be stronger again because of the rains, “ he said when Kingdom of God Foundation donated some relief items to the victims.
He expressed optimism about the government initiating projects to curtail the damages of high waves in due course.
“Now the sea is consistently crossing the road, bringing more sand, so before cars will have to pass, they have to scoop the sand daily. But we hope that with time, the situation will be resolved”, he said.
Between January and March 2025, the sea washed away over 100 units of rooms, displacing over 600 residents in the Ketu South Municipality.
The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, recounted how he spent a night with the victims, hence having foreknowledge about their predicaments.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ending the consistent coastal erosion, and providing the victims with befitting compensations.
“As a government, we are determined to ensure that we find a permanent solution to this particular development. Government has captured this particular project – the sea defense project – which we believe will give a permanent solution to the perineal tidal waves situation in those communities”, he said.
The Director of the Kingdom of God Foundation, John Paul Semavor said their donation was to support the government in dealing with the problem.
He hopes the 50 5kg bags of rice and 30 mattresses would help alleviate the plights of the victims in the interim, while the government plans to provide permanent solutions to the coastal erosion.
“We know how tidal waves have devastated our people. I was out of the country when I heard of it, so I planned that the moment I get back, I will call on the Minister and do some donations”, he stressed.
He urged the victims to keep hopes alive as the government takes measures to safeguard the coasts and ensure their lives and properties are safe from the sea.
