In a groundbreaking initiative, a paragliding project is set to be introduced in the Volta Region by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).
The project, described as ambitious and transformative, is being spearheaded by the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the GTA, Mr Ekow Sampson.
A site visit was recently conducted by a team of experts, including a renowned paragliding pilot, to assess suitable locations for the inaugural event.
The team was warmly received by Mr Daniel Dzegede, Executive Director of the Volta Development Forum (VDF), who conveyed his enthusiasm for the proposed project.
The assessment focused on three key locations—Likpe, Amedzofe, and the Adaklu mountains—with the aim of establishing a paragliding event akin to the well-known Kwahu Paragliding Festival.
The initiative is expected to enhance the tourism appeal of the region while promoting cultural exchange and sustainable community development.
According to Mr Sampson, the project is anticipated to unlock the Volta Region’s vast tourism potential, contributing significantly to local economic growth. “It is believed that this initiative will foster cultural exchange and community development and have a positive impact on the entire region,” he stated.
The potential for economic benefits was underscored, with increased demand expected for hotels, restaurants, and other tourism-related businesses. Full support for the project was pledged by Mr Dzegede and Dr Stanley Glatey, Vice President of the VDF Tourism Committee, who assured the GTA team that close collaboration with state institutions would be ensured to guarantee the project’s success.
Although challenges such as inadequate road infrastructure were acknowledged, the commitment to overcoming them through joint effort was affirmed.
It has been indicated that the Volta Region, and Likpe in particular, is being positioned to become a premier destination for paragliding, with the maiden event potentially being scheduled for December.
Mr. Godfred Koffie, District Chief Executive for the Guan District Assembly, expressed the Assembly’s readiness to support the project and to enhance public awareness of tourism opportunities in the area.
As the initiative progresses, the Volta Region is expected to emerge as a key tourist destination, offering breathtaking natural landscapes, adventure sports, and the renowned hospitality of its people.
