Dreams FC captain Abdul Jalilu says his primary focus is providing the best for his family rather than winning prestigious football awards like the Ballon d’Or.
The center-back recently secured a move to the Rwandan Premier League, joining the growing list of Ghana Premier League (GPL) stars transitioning to East Africa.
Following the conclusion of the 2023/24 season, many GPL players have sought opportunities in other leagues across the continent, with Rwanda emerging as a popular destination. Notable transfers include Richmond Lamptey of Asante Kotoko and Seidu Dauda Yussif, who led Samartex FC to their first league title. Both players have signed two-year contracts with APR FC in Rwanda.
Abdul Jalilu, who played a crucial role in Dreams FC’s 2022/23 FA Cup victory and their semi-final run in the Caf Confederation Cup last season, has joined Mukura Victory Sport. The 24-year-old centre-back has signed a two-year contract with the Rwandan club.
Speaking exclusively with Akoma 87.9 FM, Abdul Jalilu shared his reasons for leaving the Ghana Premier League after four years, emphasising his commitment to securing a better future for his family over personal accolades.
“I was not tired of playing in the Ghana Premier League, but after years of doing so, I felt it was time to move out.”
“Just like everyone prays for the best in life, I needed to change because it was beneficial to me. I am playing football to transform the family, especially given the number of people that rely on you. So, when you get an offer and compare it to what you used to take, you just think about it and move.”
Jalilu reveals that he is not playing football with the intention to claim awards but to change situations at home and make a good living.
“Honestly, I’m not playing football to win the Ballon D’or or the World Best, no! I’m more interested in changing homes because my current one isn’t very good.”
“The Ghana Premier League is fantastic, but after four years, I felt it was time to alter the environment.” He ended.
