The Member of Parliament (MP) for Korle Klottey Constituency, Zenator Rawlings has urged the government to invest more into locally produced poultry, to decrease importation of foreign poultry products.
She made this statement at the 4th Ghana Poultry Day Festival, organised by the Ghana Tourism Authority, in collaboration with the AgriHouse Foundation, to celebrate the country’s poultry sector, create awareness and advocate for its investment.
The event themed, “Celebrating Diversity in Poultry: Roast, Taste and Nourish the nation,” witnessed traditional leaders, persons from the US and Nigeria diaspora and students engaged in a healthy competition, aimed at promoting the consumption of local poultry products.
Ms Rawlings who served as a chief judge for the competition, indicated that government’s investment in the local production of poultry products, will aide in boosting the exportation and consumption of local poultry.
“The main objective is to bring awareness to the locally produced poultry and also with the hope that we can do two things where we can get government to perhaps invest more into the poultry sector, make it cost effective and support up and coming businesses.”
“We are in a situation where currently we have a huge deficit between the amounts of products we produce and what we consume verses how much we import and that clearly is not helping. In order to increase local production and decrease the imports, it has to be cost effective. The cost of production is too high,” she added.
The Executive Director for AgriHouse, Alberta Nana Akyaa Korsah called for more attention to be drawn to the animal rearing sector of the agriculture industry in the country.

“Over the years, I feel that the crop sector has always overshadowed the livestock and poultry sector. So, our agenda was to ensure once more that, with this initiative, that they are in tandem in receiving some sort of equal attention.”
“We have the planting for foods and jobs, which also focuses on the crops sector and the government also had the rearing for food and jobs. But if you weigh it from afar, you will realise that the PFJs have received more visibility,” she stated.
