Following recent disturbances between residents of Kandeu and Tuolu communities in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region that claimed the lives of three, the Chief and elders of Kandeu have called on journalists to desist from making false reportage in their line of work to avoid escalating tensions between the two communities.

According to the Chief, the churning out of false news by the media has the potential to heighten tensions amongst the feuding factions thereby affecting the peace in the area.

He charged the media to make sure they cross-check their facts well before putting information out there for public consumption to avoid conflicts as happens elsewhere.

This was contained in a Press Release dated June 26, 2024, and signed on behalf of the chief by Naa Ibrahim Bayong, chief of Vieri.

The recent land and chieftaincy disputes between Kandeu and Tuolu communities both in the Wa West District have become a source of concern to the traditional leaders and security apparatus in the district and region at large.

“The Chief and Elders of Kandeu Traditional Area wish to admonish everyone especially the Media to desist from false reportage which could raise tempers.

“Get your facts right before reporting. The reportage should be about the recent disturbances on land and chieftaincy issues and nothing else because it is a delicate issue and could lead to conflict as experienced in other parts of the country,” the statement read in part.

While calling for peace and calm between the two communities, the chief of Kandeu, Naa Nabijia Halidu, through Naa Ibrahim Bayong (Chief of Vieri) refuted accusations that the visit of the Tuolu community by his subjects was meant to launch an attack against the Tuolu community.

According to him, the visit by his people was to perform some sacrifices to “appease the gods” in the area following the refusal of the losing party – Manchara Dare – as determined by the Paramount Chief in the area to perform the same.

He noted that the community, having been given the green light by the Paramount Chief and President of the Wechiau Council to go ahead with the performance of the sacrifices at Tuolu, were in the process attacked by Manchara Dare and his men with offensive weapons that led to the loss of lives.
