Hungary has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s 2007 Autonomy Plan as the foundation for resolving the Moroccan Sahara issue, emphasising that it “must be the basis for the solution” within the framework of the United Nations.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó made this statement on Wednesday following talks in Budapest with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.
Szijjártó also noted that Hungary has taken into account the positions of major powers, including the United States and France, which have expressed similar support for the autonomy proposal.
He further announced that he has instructed the Hungarian Ambassador to Morocco to visit the Sahara region, following the example of ambassadors from other leading nations.
In a significant move to deepen bilateral ties, the Hungarian Minister also declared that the consular services of the Hungarian Embassy in Morocco will now be extended to Moroccan citizens across the entire country.
With these developments, Hungary reinforces its clear support for the Autonomy Plan and contributes to the growing international momentum backing the initiative.
This stance aligns with the latest UN Security Council Resolution 2756, which calls for continued efforts based on the Autonomy Plan as a realistic and credible solution.
