Students of Senior High Schools in the Ashanti Region have donated one hundred thousand cedis towards the surgery of a female student shot in the eye by a colleague at the Adventist Senior High School in Kumasi.
The Regional Executive Council of the Students’ Representative Council raised the funds through the support of administrators of the second-cycle institutions.
Together with the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools, a voluntary donation was opened for students to contribute.

President of the ARSRC, James Acheampong, says the suggestion for voluntary donation was accepted by the student body.
“CHASS thought through our proposal and realised it is wise that a contribution is made towards the healthcare of our colleague,” he said.
He added “when the issue was placed on board, most students were moved to donate towards the surgery. Some contributed as high hundred cedis. In some schools, students paid five cedis each.”
Suzzy Pinamang, who was shot in the eye, is unable to see with both eyes.

Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital are recommending surgical operations on the eye after confirming severe injuries.
Members of CHASS who accompanied the students to visit the victim assured her of their support for her healthcare needs.
Head of CHASS, Rev. Dr. Stephen Owusu Sekyere wants parents to help in preventing their wards from carrying contrabands to school.
“We want parents to help us search their wards very well when coming to school to prevent them from bringing contraband to school,” he said.

The government has authorised the frequent search of luggage of students in school, a mandate CHASS is committed to fulfilling.
Students are also encouraged to provide information on colleagues with dangerous implements in their luggage.
Meanwhile, the family of the victim of the shooting incident has expressed gratitude towards the gesture by the students.
