ActionAid Ghana has called on President Akufo-Addo to expeditiously assent the Affirmative Action, called Gender and Equity Bill 2024 which has been passed by parliament.
The purpose of the bill is to effectively address social, cultural, economic, and political gender imbalances in the country, stemming from historical discrimination against women and persistent patriarchal socio-cultural systems and norms.
The bill also seeks to ensure gender parity within both the public and private sectors.
In a press statement, however, ActionAid Ghana urged President Akufo-Addo assent to the bill and ensure that provisions in law are fully adhered to.
“ActionAid Ghana proudly applauds the Parliament of Ghana for taking steps to pass the Affirmative Action Bill 2024. With the passage of this important legislation, women and girls will be empowered in every aspect of our society and gender equality and equity will be achieved.
ActionAid urges the President to assent to the bill expeditiously and progress to ensure that the provisions of the law are translated into concrete actions that can dismantle the systemic barriers impeding women’s progress”. the statement said.
Emphasizing the importance of the bill, ActionAid Ghana also urged the private sector to adhere, adopt and promote gender-inclusive policies around the law when it assented.
In a related development, ActionAid Ghana also called on President Akufo-Addo to assent to the Criminal Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2022.
This bill according to ActionAid Ghana is needed in protecting vulnerable individuals especially women from the harmful and often deadly accusations of witchcraft.
