The Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, has stated that those who have the authority to hire also hold the right to fire.
Speaking on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM on April 24, Mr Gyamfi defended the recent dismissal of Dr Atiku Adam, the Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), saying the decision was well within the rights of the appointing authority.
His comments come after the CEO of TTH Dr Atiku Adam, was dismissed by President John Mahama following reports of mismanagement and medical negligence at the hospital, which allegedly led to the death of a patient.
The dismissal came shortly after the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, paid an unannounced visit to the facility following the death of a patient.
Responding to questions about the controversy that has trailed the dismissal, Mr Gyamfi stated, “Unless anyone can show any violation of the law in the dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer, I don’t think the appointing authority owes anyone an apology or an explanation for the decision to remove him.”
He further added, “If he feels that his rights have been infringed upon, he can seek redress in a court of competent jurisdiction.”
Reaffirming the lawfulness of the dismissal, Mr. Gyamfi said “The one who has the prerogative to hire also has the prerogative to fire,” highlighting that the authority to terminate an appointment lies with those who made it in the first place.
