Hungary striker Barnabas Varga is okay in hospital following a concerning mid-air collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn during Sunday night’s Euro 2024 match.
Varga sustained a fractured cheekbone from the incident and is scheduled to undergo surgery, Hungary manager Marco Rossi informed BBC Sport.
“Varga is okay,” said Rossi. “Unfortunately, he will be operated on because he suffered a fracture. We will see [what happens]. If we progress in the tournament, for sure, he will not be with us.”
Rossi reassured that Varga is “healthy” and “not under any kind of risks.”
The match was halted for nearly seven minutes as Varga received extensive treatment on the pitch. He was eventually carried off on a stretcher, with sheets held around him to maintain privacy. The Hungarian Football Federation later confirmed via a post on X that Varga is in a hospital in Stuttgart, promising to provide updates on his status.
